Sure, I've been to Macinac Island in my childhood, but there's so much more to explore in our great state. That changed this past weekend. My original plans of visiting Chicago were suddenly lost and I hopped in the car with a few girlfriends, one of which had a cabin in Mio, MI. As soon as we arrived and in hopes of relaxing, we roped our tubes together and lazy-tubed down the Au Sable River (extra tube for the cooler, naturally) on a perfectly sunny Saturday afternoon. Upon our return and after a delicious grilled dinner we sat outside and stared at the stars peppered in the black night sky. I remember thinking: you don't see stars like this in the D. It was so beautiful.

The next day, the 4th of July, we packed up the Jeep and headed for Sleeping Bear Dunes. Another place I'd never seen; I was in awe. However, on this particularly hot and humid day we were unable to reach the top of the dunes but were happy with our attempt. After rehydrating and resting we took the scenic drive and stopped at the designated areas to get out and roam. My favorite was the Lake Michigan overlook. The sun was so bright that the water just blended into the sky on the horizon. Right there I had one of those moments I want to hold onto forever.

After a gorgeous ride through the trees we drove a few more miles into Glen Arbor for a little wine tasting. Cherry Republic is a quaint winery with luscious landscaping and even more delicious cherry wines. We trailed through their sweets store that infused their cherries into everything from jellies to guacamole (the guac was DELISH) and headed for the wine store where we tasted the wine list from top to bottom. I definitely picked up a couple bottles of red wine to bring back home with me!

Still glistening from the heat, we headed for a dip in Lake Michigan. It was freezing and refreshing all at once! Just sitting in the water letting the waves rush over you is uber-relaxing. Upon a suggestion from a friend we went to Art's Tavern for dinner. I can confidently say that Art's has the best onion rings I've ever tasted. And I think my friends agreed!

On Monday (thank goodness for paid holidays!) we relaxed by putting lawn chairs in the river and soaking our feet as the water rushed by. Another scrumptious dinner from the grill, some Moose-Tracks ice cream from the store across the street and we were on our way home, back to our regular lives.

Check out some more awesome Pure Michigan posts here and here (shameless plug for my friends!)

New Beginnings

Lookie what I got!

(!!!)

Certainly an investment. As we walked out of the airport and spotted Shubha's Mom (Meena) and Uncle (Kaka) I attempted to take in the sights, smells and overall thoughts. But in India, things move quickly, and we were walking straight to the taxi that would take us to our first destination: The Guha's flat. Meena and Kaka made sure my first activity was an adventure by taking an old almost-broken-down taxi (actually, they were all like that). Shubha had warned me about driving in India, but I was unprepared. Driving in India is like survival of the fittest. You just go, don't hit anyone, and make sure no one hits you. Horns are honking constantly- not because people have road rage like here in the states, but because that's how you let people know you're there. The backs of buses say "horn, please" because they can't see when someone needs to get around them. There are bikes, scooters, taxis, cars, auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws, buses, streetcars, and pedestrians all weaving around each other and driving within inches of each other. I think my heart stopped several times during the hour drive. Needless to say, one must be a very aggressive driver to make it in this town. Surprisingly, there are few accidents.

Upon first observation, Kolkata was similar to Reynosa, Mexico (a poor colonia in Mexico-I did a missions trip when I was in high school with my church youth group). There were cows and donkeys on the side of the road, wild dogs running in front of the car, clothes hanging outside of the shacks where people lived. When we finally arrived at the Guha's flat (Mr. and Mrs. Guha are the parents of the Tapas, who got married while we were there) there was a receiving line waiting for us! As soon as I stepped out of the car people started staring. Many had never seen a white person before, let alone a pale-skinned (thanks M&D for the Irish skin!) woman walking the streets. I must admit: I was extremely overwhelmed at first. Yes, I got major culture shock. The flat where we stayed was a small apartment and there were a LOT of people there for the wedding. Many didn't speak English, so the language barrier was tough to adjust to. Mr. Guha showed us all of the gifts and trimmings that were in route to the hall where the marriage was to be held later that night. Everything was so ornate and beautiful.

The first order of business was to get a blouse for me to wear with my Sari and get it tailored. So we set out into the streets which are lined with vendors selling all sorts of goodies. We got a blouse, silver shoes (for $2!) and a few silk scarves for gifts before heading back for lunch and a MUCH needed catnap before the wedding. The food was delicious! It was a little spicy for my taste, but I got used to it quickly. We had rice with lentil soup sauce, fish, spicy cabbage and for dessert, a tasty sweet sauce with dates (yum). They gave me a spoon, knowing that's how I ate normally, but I saw Shubha and Meena eating with their hand, so I did too. I quite enjoyed it, to be honest. I think I shocked her family! I wanted to experience the culture in its entirety, and did I ever! It was hilarious and fun. After a sleepless attempt at napping (keep in mind, India is 10.5 hours ahead, so my clock was off and it was difficult to sleep the majority of my time there), it was time to prepare for the marriage ceremony. I needed a shower, as you can imagine after all that travel. Now, this is the part I could never get used to. They don't use shower heads like we do here because of water conservation, so I bathed over a bucket of hot water. Don't get me wrong, there are shower heads, but I used one once my entire trip. That's how they do it! (I even noted this in my journal; that it'd be the hardest thing for me to get used to the entire trip.) Afterward, Meena helped me into my Sari, all 60 yards of beautiful green silk fabric folded and tucked and draped around me ever-so-carefully. I would never be able to replicate that! I felt so beautiful- like a princess. As soon as I walked out of the bedroom, Shubha's Aunt Dede began saying how beautiful I looked in a Sari and showing me around to the others in the room. Don't worry, I didn't let it get to my head ;)

More to come in part 2: the wedding. Do you think dreams have hidden meanings? Do you remember your dreams?

I truly believe that our dreams are derived from something in our subconscious. They are triggered by our feelings and significant (or not-so-significant) events in our life. I had an incredibly thought-provoking dream last night. Now, it should be said (and many of my friends can contest to this) that I have very weird dreams, sometimes borderline-crazy. I'm one of the lucky people who remember their dreams and I like to research the deeper meaning. I awoke this morning confused and shocked by my dream and wrote it down so I wouldn't forget. Here's the premise of the dream (please forgive how I run on... but that's how dreams go, right?):

I was in a cabin with my Mom, sister and some others I didn't know. I was getting married, but it was a very quick engagement and with the help of friends I put on my dress. I realized that my shoes were outside in the rain- I remember looking through the window at my white satin shoes. I began to put my makeup on, worried that my everyday makeup from earlier this morning was smudged and needed fixing. Suddenly the scene shoots to me driving in the bright sunny day. Again, the scene shoots to a desert and a rhinoceros was talking to me (yes, that is correct). He was saying that I was a princess and he was told he must kill me. So he started to charge me, but I ducked under him so he couldn’t see me. Then, I was back in the cabin and telling my fiancé he shouldn't marry me because I believed he was in love with someone else. The girl was a coworker of mine in real life. And then, BEEEP! My alarm went off. Crazy, right?

I can't remember ever dreaming of a talking animal, let alone dreaming of a rhino. But even the small details I remembered have meaning. I Googled a few key words and here's what I found:

Animals symbolize the untamed and uncivilized aspects of yourself. Thus, to dream that you are fighting with an animal signifies a hidden part of yourself that you are trying to reject and push back into your subconscious. Refer to the specific animal in your dream.

To see a rhinoceros in your dream, suggests that you need to forge ahead toward your goals and do not take "no" for an answer. Do not let any obstacles sidetrack you from your destination. You need to be more aggressive.

To dream that animals can talk, represents superior knowledge. Its message is often some form of wisdom. Alternatively, a talking animal denotes your potential to be all that you can be.

If you are single and dream that you are a bride, represents your desires for marriage. Alternatively, it may represent the most feminine qualities about yourself. The dream may also symbolize purity and virginal qualities.

To dream of infidelity (either by you or someone else), you are feeling emotionally confined and need an outlet for your feelings.

Deserts are also symbolic of barrenness, loneliness and feelings of isolation and hopelessness. The desert landscape may also be a metaphor for feeling deserted and left behind.

To dream that you are watching the rain from a window, indicates that spiritual ideas and insights are being brought to you awareness. It may also symbolize fortune and love.

Interesting, eh? I certainly thought so. I'm digging the meaning of a rhinoceros in my dream!

If you remember your dreams or even a few details, I encourage you to research what it means. You'll be surprised at what you find! Granted, this was from a hokey website but I've noticed a lot of meanings are universal. Go forth and dream!

*This post may not fall under the said-purpose of my blog and it is personal, but there's something to be said for the power of dreams.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

My travel overseas is in less that a month! I've spent the morning getting my itinerary together and have come to the realization that I am so thankful to be going with someone who is familiar with the area/travel. I'll be on seven different planes during my trip (and I can't even imagine how many trains and cabs) traveling to and from Mumbai (Bombay), with layovers in Amsterdam, and within India itself. We'll be traveling to Ahmedabad, Kolkata (Calcutta), Raipur, Indore and Mumbai visiting family. The wedding is in Kolkata at the beginning of our trip. We have some very exciting things planned! I can't wait to share my experiences and photos when I return.

Psst: Check out the rad hotel we're staying at the last night in Mumbai! Complete with an "exclusive ladies wing with customized services" so I'll be relaxed and primped for my 23 hour trip home! :)

Happy Birthday Logan

Happy Birthday to the cutest baby I've ever laid eyes on... It was so simple (my hair was the hardest part) but I got a lot of compliments on it! Rosie the Riveter was born!

Some people, at first glance, thought I was Lucille Ball or Betty Boop, but once I flexed my muscles and yelled "WE CAN DO IT!" it clicked!

What do you think?

We Can Do It!

I'm so excited for Halloween this year. Not only is it fun to dress up, but getting into character with friends and family is a blast! Who wouldn't want to pretend to be someone else for a day?

This year I am dressing up as Rosie the Riveter. In the spirit of getting into character, I did some good ol' fashioned research on Rosie (using my company's electronic databases, naturally!) and was so surprised at the amount of information I found.

So, who is Rosie the Riveter? All the PR and media folks will be happy to know that Rosie was a media propaganda created to encourage women to fill in for men who were fighting in the war.

During World War II, Rosie the Riveter became a national symbol of millions of women who took new and challenging jobs in the wartime economy. The term "Rosie the Riveter" was originally coined when song lyrics in 1942 talked about a dedicated riveter named Rosie. Soon after, newspapers and magazines began publishing stories of strong women working in the place of the men at war. The original "We Can Do It!" poster (see right) was created by J. Howard Miller in 1942 and in 1943, Norman Rockwell created another Rosie the Riveter image (see left) which was featured on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post and became a legendary symbol for social change in the 1940's.

The Rosie era has paved the way for women to be:
Brickmasons and Blockmasons
Cabinetmakers and Bench Carpenters
Carpenters
Cement Masons and Concrete Finishers
Civil Engineers
Construction Laborers
Cost Estimators
Drywall and Ceiling Tile Installers
Painters
Electricians
General and Operations Managers
Hazardous Materials Removal Workers
Helpers
Machinists
Mechanical Drafters
Mechanical Engineers
Occupational Health and Safety Specialists
Operating Engineers and Other Construction Equipment Operators
Paving, Surfacing and Tamping Equipment Operators
Pipelayers
Plumbers, Pipefitters and Steamfitters
Sheetmetal Workers
Stonemasons
Structural Iron and Steel Workers
Structural Metal Fabricators and Fitters
Truck Drivers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer
Telecommunications Line Installers and Repairers
Telecommunications Equipment Installers and Repairers
Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers

Did you know that there is a Rosie the Riveter Memorial in Richmond, California? A REAL woman, baring it all, in a magazine. This is truly a monumental event. Many women (and I admittedly put myself into this category) struggle with body image. Much of this is triggered by how women are portrayed in the media, models, celebrities, etc., with too-thin bodies that mold our internal expectations from a very young age. We see Lindsay Lohan's ribs and Madonna's sickly arms and think this is the way a woman is supposed to look. Well, I've got news for you! The average woman is a size 12-14. We have curves. And they're beautiful! Did you know that Marilyn Monroe had a dress size 12? And she still remains one of the most notorious sex symbols of all time. How about the singer-turned-actress Beyonce? She's a size 10-12 (and had no problem kicking the crap out of Ali Larter in Obsessed)!

It's refreshing to see a beautiful plus-size model (I say plus-size 'model', but she is an average-size 'woman') look and feel happy in her own skin. This is 20-year-old Lizzi Miller, a plus-size model who was photographed for a story about feeling good in your own skin in Glamour magazine. She even says "...I realized that everyone's body is different and not everyone is skinny naturally--me included! I learned to love my body for how it is, every curve of it. I used to be so self-conscious in a bikini because my stomach wasn't perfectly defined. But everyone has different body shapes! And it's not all about the physical! If you walk on the beach in your bikini with confidence and you feel sexy, people will see you that way too."

Wow. I'll sit in a chair and read a booklet, sign a consent form, chat with colleagues and nurses. I will sit in front of a computer and answer 50 questions and have my finger pricked and my blood processed through a machine. I'll lay down on a cot for 20 minutes with a needle draining the blood from my veins. Then I'll enjoy juice and cookies before heading back to my cubicle. Why do I do this? It's simple. With every donation, I save three lives. Me. Saving Lives. Today will be my 6th time donating in my lifetime. My running tally: 18 potential lives saved from my blood. That's a great feeling. Sure, I HATE needles. But the opportunity to take an hour out of my life and put aside my fear is well worth it.

Nearly 5 million people receive blood transfusions every year. For many, this could be the difference between life and death. Some need regular blood transfusions to live. But only 5% of the eligible population actually donates. Blood levels are critically low. Every two seconds someone in the the United States needs blood. It's up to YOU to give them that blood.

American Red Cross' Top Ten Reasons to Donate:

10. You will get free juice and cookies.
9. You will weigh less — one pint less when you leave than when you came in.
8. It's easy and convenient — it only takes about an hour and you can make the donation at a donor center, or at one of the many Red Cross mobile blood drives.
7. It's something you can spare — most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.
6. Nobody can ask you to do any heavy lifting as long as you have the bandage on. You can wear it for as long as you like. It's your badge of honor.
5. You will walk a little taller afterwards — you will feel good about yourself.
4. You will be helping to ensure that blood is there when you or someone close to you may need it. Most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.
3. It's something you can do on equal footing with the rich and famous — blood is something money can't buy. Only something one person can give to another.
2. You will be someones hero — you may give a newborn, a child, a mother or a father, a brother, or a sister another chance at life. In fact, you may help save up to three lives with just one donation.
1. It's the right thing to do.

I usually sport the "be nice to me, I gave blood today" sticker in hopes that people will ask me about my experience. Honestly, it's really not bad at all. At most, it's two or three small pricks, an hour out of my day and 24-48 hours of avoiding strenuous activity.

Find out about American Red Cross' eligibility requirements and tips for a good donation experience.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://radiantthoughts.blogspot.com/2009/08/to-give-or-not-to-give-that-is-question.html' title='To Give or Not To Give? Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light." ~ Albert Schweitzer

My trip to Chicago was amazing. However, I didn't get the opportunity to take many scenic pictures because I was so enjoying the time with two of my closest girlfriends, Meredith and Lauren. Mere's recent post about our visit inspired me to write a post about the power of true friendship and how it can be life-changing. I can honestly say I wouldn't be who I am today if it weren't for my friends.

One thing I've learned in my twenties is that we, as women, have many different types of friendships. We have acquaintances, good friends, great friends, bff's, girlfriends, boy-friends, best friends and lovers (otherwise known as boyfriends and husbands). We have friendships with siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. But at the heart of them all there's a connection. And if you find a friendship in which nothing can ever break that connection, you've found a freindship for life.

I came across this poem which I thought was exactly how I feel about my friends:

Thank You Friend
I never came to you, my friend,

and went away without

some new enrichment of the heart;

More faith and less of doubt,

more courage in the days ahead.

And often in great need coming to you,

I went away comforted indeed.

How can I find the shining word,

the glowing phrase that tells all that

your love has meant to me,

all that your friendship spells?

There is no word, no phrase for

you on whom I so depend.

All I can say to you is this,

God bless you precious friend.

-Grace Noll Crowell

Thanks to all of my wonderful friends. Don't worry, I'll post pics from my adventures!

P.S. Card catalogs have become obsolete in many libraries across the country, and now they've created an online generator! It was so beautiful there! I was in camera heaven (which was extremely evident since I took over 350 pictures!) Here's a sampling of my photos. I did a lot of exploration and climbing and had myself a blast. I miss it already.

Going off on my own to explore the rocks was the perfect time to reflect in the simple things in life. I made myself a promise that I'd remember how beautiful it was there. Natural beauty. There's nothing like it.
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5346949073269736690" style="FLOAT: left; My friends and followers all know by now that I have a heavy interest in photography. I've posted a lot of pictures and shared where I'd like to take the general interest in the future.

Now it's time to make a plan and put it into action. First step on my list is to invest in a better camera. This is actually a difficult task for a beginner. I don't understand much about equipment, though I am excited to learn. At the risk of sounding like a rookie, I want a camera that takes kick-ass pictures. So I am trying to learn all I can about this 'stuff' so I can make an educated decision.

All I know is this: I love taking pictures. I love capturing a moment in time- something that can never be truly replicated- to share with the world. (That sounds familiar- am I repeating myself??)

After I buy, I'm just going to take pictures of anything and everything. I'll definitely be one of those tourist-y people who bring their cameras everywhere and snap pictures at the most inconvenient of times. Good thing my friends and family love me. From there I'll see where it takes me. I'm sure I'll be blogging more about my adventures behind the camera.

Photo top: This is m'dear friend Lauren. We were at a bar celebrating our friend Erin's last days as a single woman, better known as her Bachelorette party, and we all tried to squeeze into a booth. As you can see, we all didn't fit. I don't know what it was about this photo-op, but I liked the way her legs curved, so I snapped a picture.

Photo bottom: There's no better feeling than buying a pair of new stiletto peep-toe heels, to me anyway.

Some photo-blogs I adore:

http://www.ksenijasavicblog.com/
http://jkphotographyonline.net/
http://michpics.wordpress.com/
http://www.ourcitylights.org/
http://www.whatseanwrote.com/
http://photowanderer.typepad.com/the_wandering_photographe/

Natural Highs

This is an old note I posted to my Facebook page years ago, but have been recently thinking about the little things in my life that bring me joy. There's something about capturing the innocence of a newborn that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This is my friend's baby, Logan, born December 22nd. He is absolutely precious! I just love the drool dripping down mom's arm ;)

Taking his picture gives me baby fever, but, for the record, I'll wait a while before having one of my own!

It's funny how interacting with children makes us remember what it's like to be curious about the world around us. This is a great article from CNN.com that talks more about the free resources libraries provide to the public. Here are some tidbits from the article:

"In times of recession, people take advantage of free services, and going to the library is among the most popular."

"In the past year, libraries across the country have seen dramatic increases in the use of their services, which in addition to free Internet access can include resume workshops and foreclosure seminars."

""Whenever you have tough economic times, public libraries are a place people go because they have no other alternatives or because they know they are going to get the kind of powerful information that will make a difference in their lives," said Kristin McDonough, director of the Science, Industry and Business Library in New York City."

Click here to read the article and how libraries across the nation are helping the community thrive through these hard economic times.

SOMI Polar Bear Plunge

This past Saturday I participated in the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge to raise money for over 16,000 athletes in the state of Michigan to compete in the Special Olympics games. What is a Polar Bear Plunge, you ask? It's a fun-filled event open to all courageous and community-minded individuals willing to plunge into cold water to raise funds needed to support the year-round athletic training of more than 16,000 athletes across the state. Our team, happily ever after, plunged into the Detroit River at the Roostertail in downtown Detroit. Outside temperature: 22 degrees. Water temperature: 33 degrees. There was an ambulance on-hand and an underwater recovery team in the water ready for anything. I wore a Tinkerbell costume, Lauren was a Frog Prince, Rita was a princess and Mike was "the Todd". Our Detroit Plunge raised over $40,000 for the SO athletes! I can't tell you the number of people who told me I was "nuts" or "crazy". Maybe I am. But, I can honestly say, I will do it again next year!

If you'd still like to donate to my team, go to http://www.firstgiving.com/sarahwithers. I work with public libraries to develop their reference collection to help meet the information needs of the community in which the library serves. It's been a year since I've started working at Gale, and I have had the opportunity to learn much about public libraries and the services they offer.

In these tough economic times, people everywhere are looking to cut corners. They are giving up luxuries like eating out, going to the movies, renting movies, magazine and newspaper subscriptions, Internet, and more. Now, more than ever, people are turning to their public library to fill the void left behind by these sacrifices.

Here are some examples of what you can do at your public library:

Join a book club or book discussion group

Take your kids to story time

Check out DVD's, CD's, Audio books and of course, regular books

Use computers/Internet

Take computer literacy classes

You can also use your library as an escape... find a comfy chair and read a book. Many larger libraries have coffee houses inside.

Be sure to check out the events at your library.

Film festivals

Author readings/signings

Gaming gatherings for teens

Tax help

Local celebrity seminars

Lectures

Many libraries have special collections.

Genealogy

Local history

African American history

Government documents

You can use library resources to:

Search for a job/career development/resume building

Learn a foreign language

Research (reference)

Catch up on world news

Find legal documents

Research health and wellness

Use your state electronic library to find accurate and comprehensive information from home. Michiganders, I suggest using the Michigan Electronic Library. All you need is your driver's license number to access the online resources.

If you live in the area, I highly suggest checking out the Southfield Public Library and their events calendar.

Take an afternoon and go to your public library. I am sure you will find something worthwhile!

Update: Take a gander at this Michigan Library Calculator to see how your tax dollars are working to your advantage as you utilize your public library!

Give me an "S"!

I agree with Metrogal- sometimes you need "fluff" in your blog to change it up a bit. Although, lately most of it has been fluff... It's my turn to share with you lovely folks ten things I love beginning with S.

Here's the deal- You leave a comment on this post, and I’ll assign you a letter. You write about ten things you love that begin with your assigned letter, and post it at your place. When people comment on your list, you give them a letter and the chain continues on and on.

S (is for Sarah):

Singing- Mentioned several times in this blog, singing is truly one of my favorite things. I sing all the time, all day long. I'm starting to wonder if I should join a choir just so I can sing loudly and no one will be annoyed...

Sassy- This pretty much sums me up. Sassy and sarcastic. I'm sure I could think of many other terms that apply to my personality, but what's the fun in using all of those in this post?

Sunshine- I love to see a sunny sky. There's many times my friends and coworkers have heard me bust out singing "sunshine on my window makes me happy, like I should be" from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. I can't help it- it's the truth!

Smiling- I like smiling. Smiling's my favorite! No explanation needed. Thanks, Buddy!

Saturdays- First full day off after 5 long days of work. I get to sleep in, visit with friends and family and catch up on doing things I enjoy.

Smells- Ok, may sound weird. But I LOVE how our sense of smell can bring back memories and change our emotions. Aromatherapy has always intrigued me. Certain smells I love: grapefruit, jasmine, roses, Polo Black (mens cologne), cookies while they bake, laundry detergent, pipe tobacco, and yes- gasoline (not for too long- it can get overpowering!)

Sweets- Chocolate, in particular. It's my vice. 'Nuff said.

Sarah Jessica Parker/Sex and the City- I got lucky with that one- both beginning in "S"! SJP is a phenomenal actress. There's just something about her- the confidence, her mannerisms, her quirkiness. And SATC taught me much about being who you are no matter what life throws at you. Plus, it's addictive.

Stand-up comedy- Gotta love Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle. They keep Detroit laughing.

Soundtracks- Sometimes the music is the best part of the movie. Great soundtracks for your collection (off the top of my head): Donnie Darko, The Holiday, Love Actually, Twilight (really- it's fantastic), Empire Records.

So there you have it. "S" is a pretty Sweet letter.

Twilight

I've recently started reading the Twilight Saga, by Stephanie Meyer, and I must admit- I have found a new obsession. My friends Lauren (who has already posted on Twilight), Kendall and I saw the movie the weekend it released. I had not read any of the books but had heard how fantastic they were from several other friends/coworkers. The thought of reading a love story about vampires didn't exactly spark my interest so I forgot about it until Lauren invited me to the movie. Surprisingly- I loved it. I was so taken by the plot that I began to read the first book, Twilight, that night and haven't stopped reading since. I even convinced my mother to see it with me, again, a week later. Yes, it is a story about vampires, but it's so much more than that. The underlying theme of the saga is this: the power of love can overcome anything. Any woman, young and old, would really enjoy the Twilight saga (and I think some men, too)! I'm about halfway through the second book of four, New Moon, and still I am hooked. I definitely recommend it as an easy read, something you'll want to own.

Happy News

Many of my friends and coworkers would agree that watching the news can be very depressing. I got to thinking while at the gym yesterday, headphones attached to a receiver so I can hear sound on the TV tuned to ABC news, that there are not enough "happy" news stories to pull us out of this bailout/recession/election/destruction funk. My hunt for a site which held only happy news was short- I googled "happy news" and got exactly what I was looking for. It's a site devoted to international and national news that is positive.

As much as I love the updates on my CNN.com RSS feed, I'll be sure to check Happy News daily for a quick dose of positivity. I thought I'd share them with you. The more pictures I take, the more excited I am about pursuing photography further. I played around with color on the picture above- I think it turned out pretty snazzy. The picture below was taken while we were driving- with the top down to my friend's convertible and me contorting my body to get the right angle- but I loved the outcome (wish it were the REAL Eifel Tower!)

There's something about photography that intrigues me. Enjoy!

1. I am obsessed with song lyrics and interpreting them into my own life. You will often find lyrics on my many social networking sites (and singing them anytime, anywhere).

2. I love doing things for other people. Whether it be sending them a note or surprising them for no reason, it makes me feel good to bring happiness to other people's lives. Making others feel loved is one thing I pride myself on.

3. I have a cleft pallet- but not in the sense that most people think. There's two tiny holes in the roof of my mouth and I make a tiny screeching sound when I drink something thick (like a milkshake) through a straw. My mom calls me an amphibian.

4. I have two different colored eyes. One is bright green and one is brown. And I secretly love it when people notice.

5. I make lists and use post-its all the time, yet I still feel like my life is a crazy and unorganized! (You should see my desk at work, I must have over 20 post-its stuck on my walls, phone, monitor, etc.) Maybe too many organizational tools clutter my life...

6. The DRMM is a non-profit organization in Detroit that works to end homelessness, promote sobriety and help individuals of all ages to be free and productive members of the community. I was touched by this news story. The reporters told tales of teenage mothers who were thrown out of their homes, drug addicts yearning for sobriety and even prostitutes who simply wanted a better life, all who turned to the DRMM and are now leading healthy, fulfilling lives. Through Channel 7 Action News the DRMM is holding a telethon today, September 17th to raise money for their cause. According to Channel 7, any size donation can go far to help this worthy cause:

STOP THE HUNGER: A $20 donation provides a nutritious, hot meal for ten people...
NEW BEGINNING: A $75 donation provides one day of life changing services for one person...
COMFORT SOMEONE IN NEED: A $105 donation provides an entire week of shelter and peaceful nights for one person...
CHANGE A LIFE: A $500 donation provides an entire week of food, shelter and life changing services.

Their "life changing services" include programs for young moms (ie childcare classes), GED classes and testing, counselors, and so much more. If it weren't for the DRMM and its employees/volunteers, many would still be out on the street.

Help Hurricane Ike Victims in Metro Detroit

Please donate to Hurricane Ike victims at The MJR Theatre on Van Dyke and 15 mile in Sterling Heights. After a very long week at my National Sales Meeting for work (where they certainly kept me busy) I participated in two fundraising events. The first was a fundraiser for my mother who is raising money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Three-Day Walk. I am incredibly proud of my mom for her contributions and for her strength, as she will be walking 60 miles; 20 miles per day for the cause. According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, approximately 200,000 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and nearly 40,000 will die from the disease. That is why my mom is walking and doing a lot of fundraising. I didn't realize I would be such an integral part of her event on Friday, but I found myself selling raffle tickets and recruiting people from another area of the venue to come donate and participate in our events. I must admit, it was a lot of fun and it was very rewarding. Originally, I had signed up to participate in the Three-Day, but because of their regulations on personal goals I wasn't able to move forward. For those who walk next month- you are amazing. The commitment you have to help find a cure and create awareness is something we need in our world. If you'd like to donate to my mom's fund please click here.

CATCH THE WAVE OF AWARENESS!
After a day's rest on Saturday, I woke up early on Sunday and headed to Kensington Metro park for the Hydrocephalus Walk I blogged about previously. I was in awe at the amount of people who donated and walked/ran/wheeled. This was only the second year and I am extremely to happy to announce that the event raised over $17,000 for the Hydrocephalus Association! We walked 5 miles; up and down hills through Kensington MP with our hearts beaming. I remember hearing my friend's father say he wants to double participation next year. I know I'll be there!

Here's some facts about Hydrocephalus:
-Affects 1 million Americans
-Diagnosed in people of all ages
-One to two in every 1,000 babies is born with hydrocephalus
-It's the most common reason for brain surgery in children
-There is no known cure
-4,000 surgeries per year to treat the condition (one every 15 minutes)
-Surgical treatment costs exceed $1 billion per year
-Federal government spends less than $1 million annually on research

The Bug

I am sharing this story with you from a friend of mine I have known my entire life. When reading the story it's message really hit me. I have found myself in the same place in life as Jeppy, and I am thankful for his words:

"The bug"

So I have been going through these last few months with a poor attitude and whining about money and I have been trying to see things from the right point of view. To those of you who have tried this its not an easy thing when all you can see is the crap in front of you. Today on my way to work I was changing lanes on M59 (its the highway in Pontiac for you GR dwellers) and on my mirror was a grass hopper. I was going 70 miles an hour and that little bug was holding on for dear life! Then I was thinking that if he hung on until I slowed down he would jump when he got a chance. That would be at the next light and what if he hung on for so long just to jump into traffic? Then he would be dead! Whats the point? He hung on until I got to work. That's when I knew that God was showing me that if he can will that little grass hopper to hold on and keep him safe that he would certainly keep me safe. I need help and I know that I will be okay. I am blessed to be a christian and know of Gods love but I take it for granted. Remember that we are all bugs stuck on a mirror but the wind will die down enough to get us home safe!

Thanks, Jeppy, for sharing this story and allowing me to share it as well.

Sometimes we all need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and let it all go.

Save the Trees!

I know I'm not alone when I say I am SICK of all the junk mail I get daily in the mail. Every time I throw away coupons and credit card applications, it breaks my heart a little more. Don't get me wrong, I always try to recycle them. But I wish they weren't printed in the first place. Thanks to L-Boog I have become extremely aware of how important it is to recycle. Space for garbage dumps is fastly becoming scarce and it is up to us, the everyday person, to recycle any and all that we can. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not live next to a field of trash. My point? I've done my part to alleviate the immense amount of junk mail that finds its way into my mailbox. Don't get me wrong, I work for a publishing company and have a degree in Marketing, and I realize the importance of these mailers. However, I don't want to be a part of the killing of trees just to entice me to buy a medium pizza with two toppings for the amazing price of $10.99. If you'd like to join me in my fight to save the trees or if you're simply sick of all the junk mail, go to the Direct Marketing Association website to register your information and stop the madness!!

I heart the KF's

My favorite day of the week is Thursday. Why, you ask? Because it's Killer Flamingos night at my fav bar, Fifth Avenue in Novi. These guys rock my world, literally. They have so much evergy and charisma, you just can't help but jump up and down during their rendition of Ignition or belt out Video Killed the Radio Star with Michelle. In fact, last Thursday they let me rock out with them on the tambourine during Every Rose Has It's Thorn. It may be because my group is always right up front or that I know every word to every song they sing (okay, almost) but their energy is infectious. Most of the members have their own songs that they sing (with the exception of their guitarist, Todd) and certainly know how to bring an intense, explosive stage presence.

I was first introduced to the KF's a few years ago by a couple of my girlfriends from H-town. I have been a fan ever since and have recently been dubbed a 'groupie' by the same girls that brought me to Fifth oh-so long ago. What can I say? I'm in love...

They've been nominated for Channel 4's Best of Detroit: Best Local Band. I know they have my vote!

Sometimes you just need to dance with your girlfriends, belt out lyrics to your favorite songs, and have the best time of your life.

Walk/Run for a Cure for Hydrocephalus!

Hydrocephalus, commonly referred to as “water on the brain” is a lifelong neurological condition, affecting over one million Americans from newborns to seniors. Presently there is no cure. An estimated 40,000 shunt operations are performed each year in this country as standard treatment for this condition. Due to the lack of advancements in these treatment methods, many people with hydrocephalus are unable to lead full and productive lives.

Hydrocephalus is a disease that my cousin, Brandon, and my friend, Nicole, have been living with their entire lives. Both have had numerous surgeries; Nicole has had almost 70 in her life, 38 of which have been within the last year. However, she always has a smile on her face. I look up to her for her strength and perseverance.

Nicole and her friend Jen (pictured right) started the Detroit Hydrocephalus WALK-WHEEL-RUN for a Cure last year to raise money for the cause and create awareness of the disease. What started as a one-man-one-vehicle operation has turned into a 13-van team
within the organization's 11 years.

"Back in 1997, [Russell] Jackson never anticipated he would leave the fire department to head up a nonprofit organization. After all, firefighting was the culmination of a lifelong dream.
"What little boy doesn't want to be a firefighter?" Jackson says, laughing.

But an emergency call to his department in March 1992 changed everything. Jackson was dispatched to help an unresponsive 2-year-old who had accidentally hanged himself in the family car while trying to retrieve a toy.
"We did everything that we could to try to revive that young child," he says. The 2-year-old died despite their efforts.

"I took it pretty tough," Jackson remembers. "It's not that I had not been exposed to tragedies before, but this one hit me differently."
At the advice of a counselor, Jackson started volunteer work to help him process his grief. A friend suggested Jackson volunteer in the small rural town of Sayre, Alabama. Jackson was stunned by what he saw just 25 minutes from his home.
"When I drove into the community, it was a world of its own. It was a lot of homes that were deplorable. And that's really the only way I can explain them," he says.

"All it took was the one visit," he recalls, "and I knew I really wanted to come out and work with these folks, hand in hand, and do whatever I could to help make life a little bit easier for them."

So Jackson moved in with friends, dug into his retirement and started Kid One.

This story had tears welling in my eyes. This is the inspiration we all need to help make a difference in the world.

Jackson ends by saying, "We're that missing part of the puzzle that is preventing so many people from reaching what we'd consider as world-class medicine. ... To know that they beat it all because of a simple ride," he adds. "That has definitely been worth every bit of founding Kid One Transport."

Incredible.

Music moves the soul

I am a true believer that music can soothe, move, heal and empower the soul. Her partner was a photographer and showed me her many portfolios and albums. It was then I fell in love with the art of photography, and have been fascinated ever since.

I am an avid picture-snapper these days and I always carry my camera with me. It's nothing fancy, just a Nikon coolpix, 8 mega pixel, fit-in-your-pocket camera I got as a graduation present. But opportunities for the perfect picture seem to present themselves to me. I must admit, I get the creativity itch and go looking for great shots from time-to-time. I've often thought about enrolling in a community college to get my photography certificate. I'm fascinated by those who carry the 'professional' cameras and always make conversation with them. One woman told me the best way to learn is to pick up a camera and start snapping pictures of anything and everything.

I took the picture above with my old, worn-out digital a couple years ago. This beautiful little girl is Lexi, my friend Monica's daughter. We took a trip to the petting zoo one afternoon and this is one of the many pictures I snapped. I don't know what is it about this picture- I absolutely love it. It captures the Lexi's innocence and sassyness all at once. The picture to the right is mine and Addison's (Monica's youngest) hands. Addison was only four months old here.

During my last (and only) trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts, in January, the photography exhibit was closed to renovations. I hope to go back this summer to get some inspiration.

I'm saving for a better quality camera, but until then, my trusty coolpix will get the job done.
